08-E Prototype
Positive Traction Limited (PTL) have taken one of the ubiquitous 08 Shunters and converted it to battery power - surprisingly, there are still quite a number of these locomotives in use throughout the UK. For example, RMS Locotec is a major supplier of 08 Shunters and have a fleet ready and ideal for conversion. The initial 08 Shunter project required changes to the power source for the vehicle along with bodywork modifications, driver cab changes and a modern control system.
The changes will achieve several goals:
- Carbon reduction by removal of the diesel prime mover and implementation of battery technology.
- Traction improvement to give a 50% increase in power at the rail.
- Operational improvement through reduction in hood height and additional glazing to give 360-degree vision.
- Improved safety through the implementation of high integrity protection systems.
- Reduced maintenance burden through removal of prime maintenance intensive items.
- Reduced cost of ownership i.e., fuel costs vs recharge cost.
- 50% increase in tractive effort.
- Replacement of constant loss oil bearings with modern lubrication free equivalents.
